Ivan Galád: "The Players Will Fight for the Fans, for the Club, and for the Town"

He was coaching a team that played against a two-fold winner of the Champions League

We reached Ivan Galád on his cell phone on friday shortly before 8 pm. We were trying at least three times before he picked it up. “I am sorry, I was driving but I am in the parking lot now. I am listening to your questions,” the new coach of AS Trenčín started the interview.

You have allegedly had three offers on the table – one from the abroad, from ViOn Zlaté Moravce, and from Trenčín. Why did you decide for AS?

“I admit it has been very difficult for me to make this decision. I admire Zlaté Moravce for what they have done on the Slovak football scene. It is a likeable and unique club. They have gotten to the top league by gradual and well-considered steps. They even played against the later winner Zenit Petrohrad in the UEFA Cup this season. My final choice was however Trenčín. It is true that every coach wants to work in the top league but I believe that we will soon be there. I would like to accentuate that financial matters did not play a role in this case. I am not here because Trenčín offered more than ViOn. I have identified several interesting moments during the negotiations with the general manager. I take this offer as a big challenge. We have to stop the current situation and return higher again.”

Would you try to recollect your sport beginnings?

“I grew up in Krupina, the birthplace of Andrej Braxatoris Sládkovič. As probably all children, I wanted to become a professional sportsman but, unfortunately, I was not gifted enough. I decided therefore to become at least a successful coach. I started in the cadet district league in Dobrá Niva. Then I continued in Zvolen, first as a head coach of youth and later I took over the third-league senior team. That was followed by a very interesting experience in Vancouver, Kanada. I spent three years in the European Soccer School. The owner of the academy was a Slovak coach Roman Tulis. I like to think back on this stage of my career. We achieved third place in the Canadian league of U15 teams. In the decisive game, we lost against the boys from Ontario. I noticed a very skilled player in their team. His name was Owen Hargreaves who scored twice against us. He is a two-fold winner of the Champions League today. When my Canadian anabasis was over, I returned to Slovakia. I was coaching Petrochema Dubová and after that I started in Nitra. Besides my football activities, I had also some pedagogical duties at the Technical University. My specialization was sports and geography. Although I am not doing this job at present, I can still return to it in the future.”

Let’s get back to football. You were in Senec last fall. Then you moved to Vengloš’s Football Academy. However you earned the biggest credit in the Slovak football community through your coaching in Nitra. You took over the team that was not in the best shape and that was in the middle of the second-league table. In spite of that you soon made it into the top league. How do you remember this experience?

“First I would like to emphasize that my work in Vengloš’s academy is giving me a lot. For me, it is the best football school that I have ever experienced. And Nitra? It was a wonderful period. I will carry this town in my heart until the end of my life. I got a chance there, I took it and we advanced higher with the team. The name of Róbert Rák is connected to my coaching in Nitra. This excellent forward was the first person who sent me an SMS with congratulations to the contract with AS. Nitra is however history. The future is more important now. I am coming to Trenčín with a mission to move the team higher. I want to see the team back in the top league so the fans can soon see the Corgoň League in Trenčín again.”

I agree. Let’s leave the past up to the historians. The presence and first of all the future are more important. Trenčín is your new club. How do you want to drive the club back to the top league?

“Do not want me to talk about the playing system or about any concrete personal changes now. I will just say that I would like to work with 20 determined players and with a strong supporting team. The goal to get back among the elite must be the vital issue for both of these parts of the team. I am aware that it is a very challenging goal. Teams like Košice, Prešov, Nitra, or Slovan were not successful at the first attempt. In spite of that, I insist on my plans. I did not come to Trenčín to make friends. I am coming with a mission to achieve success – for the club, for the town, for the region. I would like to achieve something similar I did in Nitra where the mayor awarded a prize for the contribution to sports in town to me.”

The AS Trenčín fans have declared their interest to play a friendly match against the A-team. How do you like this idea?

“A match against the fans? Of course! I am ready to make an agreement with them. When they are really willing, I will be the first one to appear on the pitch although they can not expect any stunning performance from me (laugh). Besides that, I would also like to organize a match against the hockey team. And have one more message to our fans. The team led by me will definitely fight hard. It is hard to say, maybe only eight of them will finally remain. But the ones playing for Trenčín under my leadership will definitely fight – for the fans, for the club, and for the town.”
