Ivan Galád: I Apologize to All Fans of AS

AS coach is analyzing the recent negative three-game series.

We caught Ivan Galád in his office early in the afternoon. He was sitting there surrounded by piles of papers, watching the video of the last game of his team, making notes, drawing tactical alternatives, and speculating how to resolve the unpleasant situation. We disturbed him for a while and asked him a couple of questions.

The recent ten days have portrayed an unflattering situation of your team. How do you perceive it?

I am not sure if apologies belong to sport. If so, I would first of all like to apologize to all fans and all sport community in Trenčín. We are working with the same intensity as six weeks ago when our performance was completely different. Unfortunately, sport life also brings periods like this. I am analyzing the causes of this situation 24 hours every day. Until the 60th minute against Inter, nothing had been signalizing any bigger problems. Then we conceded three goals and lost two players. The game in Vráble showed that the direction players are heading is probably not right. I mean mainly the underestimating of rivals. We also fully concentrated to win the game against Lučenec, but the contrary happened. Making excuses that we missed sport luck would not be fair because our performance lagged well behind expectations. I would like to assure the football community that while I am here, I will do my best to avoid similar situations.

You indicated that your players probably underestimated the rival. What do you want to do to avoid such things in the future?

First of all, players must realize that there is no reason to underestimate other teams. In the last season, we were frankly held in derision by everybody by conceding unbelievable 77 goals. The teams that were eliminated from the top league in the past had always had big problems in the new competition. I often mention the example of Prešov fighting long six years to get back. I also remember the home loss of Inter 1-6 or the loss of Slovan against Báč. We have already experienced something similar because what happened in the last games was a fiasco. Košice and Banská Bystrica had problems to get back as well. Perhaps only Trnava’s first trial was successful. In spite of that, our goal stays the same. We chose a team for the fall part. We are working with these players and we are doing our best. If they are unsuccessful, we will find other players ready to “die” for success of AS.

But we have not seen such players in the last games…

I agree. If I knew the cause, I would do something about it right away. I and my team are analyzing the situation and we are looking for solutions.

How would you explain those four red cards in the last three games?

I have been coaching for 24 years but I have never experienced this. It is inadmissible to get four red cards in seven days. There will definitely be some financial penalization. Especially the very last Bubenko’s red card is inexcusable. I will have to talk about it with the club’s management. A player, regardless of the circumstances, can simply not hit another player. I admit something similar happened in the final of the Champions League when Didier Drogba had a similar incident but he is an incomparably better player and a lot more was at stake in that game.

You are playing against a very successful team of Rimavská Sobota in the fourth round. How are you going to prepare for them?

I personally watched one game of our upcoming rival. We will try to send a positive impulse to our fans, who have not been satisfied yet, already in this game.

How are you going to motivate the players after these negative results?

There are basically two ways. One way is repression – penalties, sanctions, etc. The other way is to work harder. I will try to find a third way though. There will be some financial penalties and we will also increase our training activity. Together with my colleagues, we will try to overcome this unpleasant period by working harder. At the end, I would like to stress that I am responsible for results. After we won the first two games, people in the streets were greeting me appreciatively and I felt very well. However, I am also responsible for these last three losses. I will do my best to get team back to the shape it had at the beginning of the season. Results are not only about players. It is the head coach who carries the primary responsibility. And it is the head coach who must take steps to prevent situations like this happening again.
