McDonald: Same Old Story Again

Rob McDonald: "So why are we losing our games?"

After playing our worst game at home to Trnava I was curious to see how my boys would react against Ruzomberok at their place. The team discipline and togetherness was there but there was an atmosphere of uncertainty during the week leading up to the game against Ruzemberok. A lot of talking was neccessary and a lot of soul searching to see how we could beat this run of missed chances and stop giving easy goals away.

We watched the whole of the Ruzomberok game with the entire squad and staff on Tuesday in "The Cinema" where we always have lunch when we train twice a day. My thanks to them for supplying us with great lunches.
If we are really honest we played very well and again created 4 good chances to score (in particular Filip who is getting in some great positions to score) but sadly and more critically it gave Ruzomberok the chance to score early in the second half with a second goal following close after... Another chance for us came, which if it became 2-1 with 30 minutes to go could have put pressure on there team but a defender just cleared the ball in time to stop us scoring.
Two more goals followed and Filip finally got his deserved goal which made the result 4-1 to Ruzomberok.

The players gave all their effort and commitment. Right to the very last minute.
The discipline is good within the group. They are living like professional players now. We check their fat percentage every 2 weeks and everybody is keeping in shape. Training is enjoyable to watch and the team spirit is extremely good.

So why are we losing our games?

I am the Coach and people ask me why are we missing our chances? Why are we letting in stupid and easy goals? The Coach is responsible for results and progress.

My answer sounds simple and it is...

Is it because we play too attacking football and give too much space away for teams to punish us? At times yes but if we sit and wait every game for a successful counter attack then you will not create many chances to win a game. Our filosophy remains we have to attack and we have a team who can do that. Other than the Trnava game we have played attractive football in most of the other games. We want to please the public of Trencin with exciting football but most of all winning attractive football.

That we have a young team?  Maybe, but that is too easy because not always are the young players making mistakes or missing chances.
Players have been told a thousand times how to defend and see man and ball so they can react quickly to every situation.

Many training sessions have been given with finishing on goal but we still miss relatively easy chances. The top scorer of Slovakia has no more than 3 or 4 goals. It comes down to mental strength. The discipline to watch both man and ball when defending (espeically at free kicks and corners). Also the discipline and courage to want to score. Remember a striker who has no chances has bigger worries than a striker who has many chances.

My team is waiting for a game when we score all our chances and we give nothing away defensively. I hope it will be this coming Sunday because the team deserve some luck but also your encouragement in our coming game this Sunday against an improved Dubnica who got a good result against Trnava last week.

Luckily we are again looking good in training but now that good work must be rewarded on the field Sunday and we walk away with the 3 points and put us level with the mighty Slovan Bratislava who are on 6 points....

It`s time to produce the points for you. Support your team and you will always be entertained by our talented team of footballers. Pray for us we can have the good fortune this time of winning again like we did against Senec. The players are determined and luckily very focused again after their disappointment last Saturday.
