Seven Youngsters Knocking on the Main Team’s Door

Also Bizub, Adi, and Mazán aspire to places in the lineup.

As many as seven players from the junior team of AS Trenčín are aspiring to places in the main team’s lineup – goalkeeper Ľuboš Draškovec and defenders Milan Marušinec, Tomáš Bizub, and Peter Valla. Marek Zvala, Fanendo Adi, and Peter Mazán are ready as well. We will try to introduce the young promising players of AS in a two-part series. A short informative commentary will be followed by players’ opinions on their transition from the youth categories to the world of professional sport as well as by a brief evaluation of the assistant coach Adrián Guľa. We are bringing information about the trio Bizub, Adi, and Mazán in the first part.

Tomáš Bizub, right defender (born on November 9, 1990)

He was one of the key parts of the junior team’s defense in the passed season. Coach Radúz Dorňák was utilizing his defensive strengths as well as his ability to support the offense. He will try to develop his talents in the main team in the upcoming period.

Tomáš Bizub: “It is a new experience for me. It will not be easy to win recognition in the first team. It is completely different. There is a lot more fighting and speed. No speculations, mostly one or two touches. I was used to play the entire games in the past. I know I will have to be patient now. I have to wait for my chance and work hard."

Adrián Guľa: “I can imagine him as an alternative in the right defense now. He is definitely not ready for eighteen games in fall yet. If he adopts the playing system and tactical variants, he will be better. It is however natural that he has to come through this difficult transition period. When he continues working hard, the improvement in single combats and other activities will come."

Fanendo Adi, forward (born on October 10, 1990)

He came to Trenčín in winter. From the very beginning he has been proving that scoring is as natural for him as sleeping at night. He became the best scorer of the prestigious tournament in Prague. He was regularly scoring also in the junior team’s league games. As a substitute, he had an appearance in the senior’s team in the game of the 32nd round against Humenné. He thanked for the big applause from the fans already after 30 seconds. His first touch with the ball in his first league appearance meant his opening goal in the main team.

Fanendo Adi: “I played mostly in the junior team in the last season. I only spent a couple of minutes in the main team. I feel that it may be different in the upcoming season. Differences between the junior and senior categories are vast, of course. The game against Banská Bystrica was a proof for me that the senior football is much faster and more aggressive. Players are stronger and more experienced. I feel though that I am ready now. It is also thanks to the coach Guľa who spends a lot of time with me."

Adrián Guľa: “He is a big surprise for me. After we changed our system a little bit, he was able to make a lot of balls. He has a big potential. He is a ‘tower’ type like for instance Koller. He needs to work hard as he can still improve. This is however a challenge for us. The basis of coach Koník’s work is primarily the daily hard work with the players."

Peter Mazán, offensive midfield/forward (bon on May 13, 1990)

He tried the senior football already in his age of seventeen. He belonged to the youngest but definitely not the shyest players in the training camp in the Netherlands. He is another player with a big potential. He is not missing a reasonable courage. He proved it also in the prep game against Banská Bystrica when he was not afraid at all of the experienced Martin Poljovka. He went through a training camp in Panathinaikos Athens this spring. His ambition is to play abroad in the future.

Peter Mazán: “The transition from the junior to senior category is the biggest step for each footballer. It is obviously completely different to play at the professional level. I have gone through two winter preps with the main team already so the environment is not entirely unknown for me. I have no fear from playing in the higher category and against more experienced rivals.”

Adrián Guľa: “He is a very solid player with an offensive drive. He is not speculating much with the ball. I think he will not have any problem to adapt in the main team. He is aggressive and enthusiastic enough. Of course, he has still a lot to do. When he gets used to some situations that he did not have to deal with in the junior team, I believe in his significant improvement."
