Having Helped Develop a European Champion, Now Running Technical Drills in Sihoť

Such an expert has probably never worked in Slovak football. Dutchman Ton Jenner came to AS Trenčín as one of the most respected specialists in drilling techniques from the country of double world-championship-runners-up and European champions. At home he does technical drills with young footballers not only at his Academy, but also is in charge of the youth squads of Sparta Rotterdam and the Hague.

“I have experienced a lot, but even for me almost everything was new,” the most experienced member of AS Trenčín Igor Szkukálek said—then added in the same breath, “So far we have only had one practice without the balls. In Slovakia, the first week is usually focused on running. However, we worked at high speed and intensity. From a conditioning point of view, it gave us more.”

The Dutch expert presented a similar opinion: “It is not true that while practicing with the ball one runs less. The weight is more intense and hard work is not that boring and monotonous. Football is obviously played with the ball, and it should be your friend not your adversary. Technique becomes increasingly important. The players are becoming faster so the space in the field is getting smaller.”

The successful work of the smiling Dutch is also proven by the successes of his son Julian. The Junior Jenner is a rising star of first-division team AZ Alkmaar and only a short time ago he helped Oranjes to the Under 21 European Championship title.

“In Trenčín there are many young footballers and all of them want to learn, which is important. Their mental approach and physical conditioning are a solid basis. Until now they have practiced a lot—often without the balls, however. They are not mere runners though. The Club especially needs creative players. Proper technique gives the necessary self-confidence to each player on the field, which is very important. No star lacks it. On the other hand, the Slovak players seem a bit scared to me and that’s what we are trying to change things,” the man who works mostly with the young talent in the Netherlands said. According to him, however, his methods should also help even experienced players to progress within two or three months.

“Even though in the Netherlands it’s mostly the eight-to-ten-year-old boys who follow this kind of practice, it also has a lot to offer to players over thirty. In order to work, it has to be followed systematically over the long term,” Szkukálek added.
