The entire football world is mourning. One of the biggest coaching legends passed away on Friday. The death of Tomislav Ivic is a sad news also for AS Trenčín. The charismatic Croat connected a part of his extraordinary career with the club from Trenčín. Although it wasn’t an official position, he shared the experience gathered in Ajax Amsterdam, Anderlecht Brussels, Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, or Olympique Marseille in the role of a willing consultant.

Tschen La Ling had the chance to be coached by this unique personality. A strong relationship has been built between the coach and the player. The native of Split had also to come to the bench of AS. An unfavorable set of circumstances didn’t allow to finalize this cooperation. The popular globetrotter eventually appeared in Trenčín though. The club had problems in the top league. Tomislav Ivic eagerly discussed with the coaches and players. They were looking for solutions in a desperate situation. Before the game against Slovan, he offered a tip how to beat them. The favorite had difficulties to react to an unexpected tactics. Peter Čögley played excellently in the position of a defensive midfield. Slovan eventually won the game, but Trenčín and Ivic got a well-deserved applause. He came to the dressing room after the game and announced the end of his Trenčín mission. The players disappointed by the loss stood up and, by a common applause, did homage to the successful coach.

The genial strategist didn’t stop following the happenings in the Trenčín club even after they left the top league. He came several times and shared his rich experience. When he couldn’t be present at the stadium, he sat in his hotel room and watched football games taking notes. He came back the other day and shared the new knowledge he gained. We were sad every time he was leaving the town. His enthusiasm was never-ending and inspired us a lot. He never forgot to thank for everything he had experienced and learned here. He, the Great Tomislav Ivic!

The news about the worsening health state of the great coach came to Sihoť already several weeks ago. We believed he would be strong enough to overcome the problems. The inscrutable destiny however ended the life journey of this excellent person. It’s a big honor for AS Trenčín that we could be one part of it.

Rest in peace, dear Mr. Tomislav Ivič!
