The Word from Rob McDonnald

New coach of AS Trenčín Rob McDonnald, the first English native coach in the Slovak football

4th round: Trenčín – Senec 2:1

“It was a very difficult match for us because we had to start winning at home. However, we didn’t use a number of unbelievably good chances, especially Doubek who probably had four opportunities to score. Since in the second half Senec also had their chances, our failure to finish off plays made it a tough match. In the end, we are happy we managed to pull out the victory in the final seconds. Anyway, I have to add that the goal that was disallowed by the referee quite certainly was not offside.”

3rd round: Artmedia – Trenčín 3:2

After the game in Žilina, another tough rival was awaiting us. This time we focused a bit more on defense. When we were in the lead 2:0, we hoped for a good result but we allowed two unnecessary goals. I am proud of the team and am thankful for the way they played.”

2nd round: Trenčín – Banská Bystrica 0:3

“I am very disappointed by the result as well as our performance since we didn’t play up to our potential. In the previous match in Žilina we our offence played quite well, however in this match we started to pile up too many mistakes. Half of the team played at a decent level but the rest played very badly. Despite this, after the game I told the players in the change room to keep their heads up because they are a young and talented team and no miracles can happen in a couple of weeks. The team needs to be strengthened at various positions with several experienced footballers.”

1st round: Žilina – Trenčín 7:1

“We came here to play football, not only to be on defense. We created some chances and didn’t play as poorly as the result shows. It was visible though that we were playing against a team that is preparing for the European Cup. It was a match – a lesson for us that there was a clear difference between us and the home team. It will take some time to improve our young team and get closer to such a performance as was shown by Žilina against us. The philosophy that we have is good, in our opinion. We believe in it and we will be working to improve. I believe that in some 6-7 weeks our game will look better.”
